Facebook Marketplace Advanced Search Guide

Search “facebook marketplace exclude words” and you’ll find a dozen guides telling you to type a minus sign. Search “exact match” and they’ll tell you to use quotes. Search “boolean” and someone will promise that OR works too. Facebook has never documented any of this, so we ran the searches ourselves. Most of the advice is wrong.

Before operators, the real filters. Marketplace gives you a location with a radius, a price range, a category, condition, delivery method (local pickup or shipping), date listed, and a sort order. The sort options are suggested, distance, newest, price low to high, and price high to low. That’s the full list. There’s no filter for seller, no keyword exclusion, and no way to require a word.

Two things to know about them. Suggested is the default sort every time you open a search, so you switch to newest by hand each session. And the radius is a circle drawn as the crow flies, so a listing across a river counts as nearby even if the drive is 40 minutes.

This is the one operator that behaves. Searching “wood dining table” in quotes returns listings that contain those words. Not every result has the phrase in the title, but the ones that don’t have it in the description, and nothing off-topic sneaks in.

We say mostly because the match isn’t strict. Word order can drift and the phrase can sit in the description rather than the title. For a model number or a brand plus product, quotes are still the best tool Marketplace gives you.

Type iPhone 12 Pro -case -cases and, according to the guides, cases disappear. Here is what Marketplace returns.

Ten results, ten cases. Marketplace reads the minus sign as nothing and searches the words that follow it, so you get more cases, not fewer. Some guides go further and claim an exclusion filter exists in the sidebar. It doesn’t.

Same test, other direction. “wood dining table” +oak should return oak tables only.

The first result is cherry. The last is walnut. Oak shows up in a few titles because it’s a common wood, not because the operator did anything.

We couldn’t find a case where these change results. Marketplace treats them as ordinary words, and since “or” and “not” are the kind of short words the search drops anyway, typing them is the same as not typing them. There’s no syntax reference from Meta to point to, because there is no syntax.

Most people want the same thing. The phone without the cases, the car without the parts, the bike without the helmet. Lotify has that filter. You set the query, then add the terms that disqualify a listing.

A listing with “case” or “cases” anywhere in it is dropped before the alert goes out. What reaches your phone in Telegram is the phone. Add “cracked”, “parts”, “screen”, whatever your category’s noise is, and they’re gone too. The location filter works the same way. You drop a pin, set a radius in kilometers, and only listings inside that circle trigger an alert. Nothing gets appended from outside your search.

Open Telegram and start @lotifybot. Pick Facebook Marketplace and choose the country. Type your query, add the words you want excluded, set the price range and radius. Run your usual Marketplace searches alongside it and count how many cases you scroll past in each.
